Tesco Low Carbon Concept Store
Harrogate

Project Overview

Project: Low Carbon Concept Store
Client: Tesco
Size: 40,000 sq ft
Status: Completed

The 40,000 sqft Tesco Harrogate store sets a new benchmark for low carbon retail in Yorkshire, delivering a flagship concept store on a former gasworks site. The scheme incorporates a petrol filling station, EV charging, and extensive landscaping, alongside strong community initiatives including food redistribution, local partnerships and a community garden.

Designed as Tesco’s low carbon concept, the store embeds circular economy principles throughout. Over 500 tonnes of demolition material were reused on site, while a glulam timber structure significantly reduces upfront carbon compared to steel. Reclaimed stone, UK-grown timber and low carbon materials further minimise environmental impact, supported by offsite construction and efficient delivery.

S+SA Architects led the project from early design through to completion, working closely with contractor KPS to deliver a highly sustainable, commercially viable superstore that sets a replicable model for future retail development.
