Our proposals for this rural exception scheme in Snainton, North Yorkshire, are rooted in the character and architectural language of the surrounding village, creating design-led homes that complement and enhance the existing village setting.
Recently approved for planning, the scheme provides 17 new dwellings, with the majority designated as affordable housing, helping to meet local housing needs while creating a high-quality and well-integrated addition to the village.
A strong emphasis was placed on understanding the local context and engaging with the community throughout the design process. The project team undertook a pre-application submission with the local authority, followed by a two-day community engagement event, providing an opportunity to present the emerging proposals, gather feedback and discuss how the development could respond positively to the needs and character of Snainton.
The resulting proposals reflect the local vernacular through their scale, form, materials and relationship to the surrounding landscape, balancing the delivery of much-needed housing with a sensitive and considered approach to rural development.
