The Commission

Exemplar Healthcare appointed S+SA Architects to produce designs for a new build 30-bed nursing care development on a brownfield site in the Tile Cross area of Birmingham.

Our Input

S+SA provided a full architectural service covering all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work, from initial concept design through to the completion of the new building.

Our Value

Initial site appraisal suggested to achieve the required accommodation proved very challenging – the first impression being the site was too small to take a 30-bed care home, a view shared at the outset by the Planning Case Officer.

Carefully considered design amendments to the scheme proposals enabled us to satisfactorily address the Case Officer’s concerns regarding the perceived scale, form and mass of the new building and successfully achieve planning consent for the client without the loss of any of the required accommodation.

Blackmoor opened its doors in September 2021 as a specialist care home for adults living with complex and high acuity needs.
