S+SA is a dynamic practice with an excellent reputation and a wide-ranging client portfolio spread across the UK. Specialising in residential, retail and logistics, healthcare and sport and leisure, sectors, excellence of service and professionalism are at the core of all our commissions and we pride ourselves in our creativity and design ability.
Originally formed in 1968, the practice evolved into Smith Smalley Architects Limited (SSA Architects) in 1991. Over a 25 year period SSA designed and developed 8 million sq ft of Retail space and 5 million sq ft of Distribution space throughout the UK and Eire, and acted as consultants to Tesco Europe. In 2014, Smith Smalley Ltd demerged and S+SA Architects was formed to create the vibrant next chapter, which continues to build on our reputation and client relationships created over the previous decades.

S+SA Architects are managed by a group of directors who lead a team of highly skilled architects and technologists to deliver innovative and quality projects across the UK. As designers we work with our clients to understand their aspirations. The designs we produce are intended to have a positive social and environmental effect to enhance the experience of those that utilise the space.
We are professional and engaged and strongly believe in a collaborative approach to design and implementation. We work with clients on projects from £250,000 to £50 million value, in both private and public sectors. The Practice’s philosophy of listening to clients, monitoring industry best practice, developing environmentally focussed sustainable solutions and adapting to changing market needs, means that innovative thinking is always a first priority.
From our studios located in Harrogate and Leeds, we are ideally placed to work with clients throughout the region and across the UK. S+SA’s studio-led, sustainable design approach ensures we always seek creative solutions on every project, regardless of scale and complexity.
