Project: Listed mill refurbishment with associated housing
Client: Caddick Construction
Size: 132,500 sq ft new residential
Status: Completed
The Commission
The scheme involved the construction of 82 new build dwellings and 30 dwellings within the existing mill and auxiliary buildings. Stonebridge Mills is the last complete cotton mill in Leeds, part of which is Grade II Listed. The site has great historical interest therefore great care was taken to retain as much existing detail as possible.
The client approached S+SA with an idea for the scheme in November 2017, envisaging a fully residential occupancy within the refurbished mill buildings and the new-build homes accompanied by associated amenities.
As a number of the collection of buildings are Grade II Listed, careful consideration was taken into how the mill’s magnificent features were to be retained, or in some cases reinstated. S+SA worked closely with the council to create effective residential spaces while highlighting key aspects of the mills. Along with the construction works, an art piece was commissioned using the presses and intricate equipment to exhibit the technology of the time.
Located adjacent to the Low Wortley ring road (A6110), the site has great connections into and out of the city. As well as providing an assortment of residential typologies, the development is also furnished with a re-invigorated pond and landscaped areas to sustain and encourage the wildlife in the area.
Our Input
S+SA’s involvement was from the initial design stage through planning and construction. Our first involvement in the project was in 2016, when the site was acquired for commercial use.
Our Value
The many facets of this development made it complex, but our close involvement with the contractor, client and local authority meant that we were able to create spaces that balance the heritage of the site with the needs required for a contemporary dwelling to create a homogenous scheme for life and play.
