This commission was gained through winning a Local Authority Design Competition. The scheme for Yorkshire Housing provides extra care facilities for frail elderly residents in a modern, stylish setting. The development includes 45 one and two bed extra care apartments designed to be fully wheelchair accessible, with guest and staff units, together with office, administration, dining, day care, treatment and leisure facilities, all housed in a single building.
The structure utilises low maintenance, energy efficient materials and is designed to a contemporary Scandinavian theme.
Rather than viewing the building as an institutional style facility, the design approach mirrored the approach usually applied to high quality, private sector housing.
Since opening, the scheme has proved hugely successful and was even used by the Department of Health as one of the venues chosen to host a road show seminar demonstrating their aspirations for the future of healthcare sector developments.
